Brand photography consists of original photos (or graphics) that are easily distinguishable as coming from your brand. Whether you are a product- or service-based business, setting up your brand photography is a very important step to building an effective brand. Your brand photography should consist of photos that tell your brand’s story, or at the very least convey your brand’s personality. The goal is to make your ideal client want to purchase from you the minute they see one of your branded photos on your website or in a digital ad. When it comes to branding, a picture may be worth much more than 1,000 words!
How do I Know What Photographs are Right for My Business?
Do your research. Look through the photographs others in your industry are using to distinguish themselves, and then make sure yours is uniquely your own. Create a mood board for inspiration and to give your photographer a sense of what you have in mind.
Should I Hire a Professional Photographer to Take My Brand Photos?
The short answer: Yes!
When starting out, it’s perfectly acceptable to hire an amateur photographer (perhaps even a student) to take your brand photos. If you will be taking photos of yourself or your team, make sure that you consider outfit choices, props, and location before you choose a photographer. You may need a specialized photographer, especially if you’re a product-based business. Be sure to view the photographer’s portfolio before making a hiring decision!
Side Note: I hired my roommate as my photographer for my first brand photoshoot! She was incredibly generous and only accepted dinner as payment even though I had two separate photoshoots, three outfit changes, and four locations!
What if I Want to Update My Brand Photography?
It is entirely acceptable to update your brand photography! Newer entrepreneurs often find their businesses change A LOT in the first few years. It’s completely natural to need new brand photographs at various stages of your business!
